I can get a lot for that," she exclaimed. And she's not alone; Kerri Underhill, a visitor from Birmingham, also expressed surprise at the prices in Porthmadog, having paid £20 for four ice creams with toppings.

Helen Holland, who has run an ice cream business on Anglesey for 18 years, has seen the industry's struggles firsthand. She attributes the increase in ice cream prices to rising production and admin costs, as well as shortages of key ingredients like vanilla and soaring chocolate prices. The previous year's drought is also believed to have contributed to the vanilla shortage.
"The increase has been phenomenal," Helen said. "It's just paper chasing, lots of it, so all in all, yes I've had enough." She has decided to retire this year due to the overwhelming costs.
A Treat or a Luxury?
For many, an ice cream is a beloved summer tradition, a seaside staple. But with the rising costs, it's becoming a luxury that not everyone can afford. Local couple Andrea and Ian Merriduw usually opt for nearby Beddgelert, where they feel they get better value. "It's worth paying extra for good ice cream," Andrea said, "but it would be too expensive for a family."
Helen Holland believes that customers understand the price increases, as everyone is feeling the pressure of rising living costs. "Having an ice cream or smoothie or something, it's a real treat these days," she said. "Whereas before you didn't even think about [the cost of] having an ice cream. Now you've got to make that decision am I going to treat myself or not?"
